Ferry Point Park Waterfront East

QRP transformed 19.5 acres of unused land along the Bronx shoreline into an ecological and accessible waterfront park. Formerly part of a municipal landfill, now abutted by a golf course, Ferry Point Waterfront Park East offers passive recreation and contemplation among native maritime grasslands and an ADA-accessible path, overlooks, and a tidal salt marsh.

The path spans the length of the park, connecting Ferry Point Park to the west and the neighborhoods to the east. Five overlooks provide places to pause and enjoy the spectacular views across the East River to Manhattan. Diverse environments include a swamp forest and tidal salt marsh, which restore ecological diversity, buffer storms, absorb and filter rain water, and encourage biodiversity. With a high ratio of softscape to hardscape, stormwater is minimized. The exclusive use of native plants in the wetland and grassland reduces maintenance costs, improves plant survival, and welcomes birds and animals. At the parking lot, a bioswale captures runoff and provides a visual narrative of the transformation from landfill to contemporary, ecology-mindful waterfront park.
