The
development of Harborfront Park, a five-acre brownfield site on the
north shore of Long Island creates a unique a haven of green on a waterfront presently dominated by
paving and parking, a park designed for passive uses, focused on Port
Jefferson's magnificent harbor front views.
The park was designed in close collaboration with the
residents of Port Jefferson, through questionnaires and a series of
interactive design workshops. The park design incorporates historic elements of the site,
which was a ship building center in the 18th and 19th centuries. An
existing warehouse was retained for conversion to a community
facility, and old tramway tracks will form trails through the park.
Users will be able to enjoy the continuous waterfront
promenade, linked to the future Harborwalk, to stroll, picnic, fish
from the pier, enjoy a game of checkers at a waterfront table or
learn about village history and ecology through interpretive signage.
Chandlery Park, a small play area, was the first phase of the
park design to be constructed. It provides a focus for young children
and includes a interactive water sprays and a custom-built boat play
structure.
