Quennell
Rothschild first assignment as campus-wide landscape architects
and planners was to create a comprehensive restoration and
improvement plan for the most historic part of the campus.
The 17 acre-historic campus includes Princeton's original
building, Nassua Hall (1754), several dormitories, classroom
buildings, and the University's administrative center.
Outdoor spaces within the historic campus include the
Front Campus, site of the annual commencement exercises;
Cannon Green, elegant courtyards, bluestone walkways,
and numerous magnificent specimen trees.
The master plan, based on detailed surveys and extensive
discussions with the Board of Trustees, the President
and University's physical planning department, provides
and overall design approach to sensitive restoration.
Acknowledging the increasing need to provide emergency
and service vehicle access to many of the buildings, the
plan proposes a new hierarchy of circulation and access
routes, which maintain the pedestrian quality of the
campus while facilitating necessary vehicular
connections. New bluestone and concrete pavers
will replace existing deteriorated surfaces. New
furnishings, lighting, signage, and planting will also
be added to the campus. A comprehensive tree survey and
evaluation has been completed. The $20 million of
improvements recommended by the plan will be carried out
over 5 years in a series of discrete phases.
