Statue of Liberty Museum, Liberty Island, Jersey City, New Jersey

Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Awards 2017: Honorable Mention for Unbuilt Landscape

Quennell Rothschild & Partners is currently working with FX Collaborative to design a new museum for the Statue of Liberty, which will replace the existing museum in the base of the statue. Only a small percentage of visitors to Liberty Island are able to go inside the statue itself, so the intent of the Statue of Liberty Museum is to provide a special experience for everyone who comes to the island.  The new museum will explain the history and construction of the statue and explore the larger concept of liberty while engaging the site.

The landscape will seamlessly merge with the building, extending vistas rather than ending them, and creating a new, naturalized habitat in place of a traditional building.  QRP is designing the landscape for the 20,000 square-foot green roof, which will be planted with native meadow species. The firm is also responsible for the planting design for seating and observation terraces; plantings for at-grade areas; and is providing soils information, irrigation requirements, and expertise on hardscape components. The project will attain a minimum of LEED silver certification.
