Barretto Point Park Shorefront Restoration

Reconstruction of this contaminated, deteriorated shoreline edge will bring a stable, resilient shoreline to this currently closed section of the park. The newly terraced shoreline will include a tidal wetland and plant communities that thrive in the in coastal environment. The plantings and habitat creation features will promote colonization by water and shore-based flora and fauna, increasing the biodiversity of the waterfront. A new pathway at the top of the bank will connect this restored waterfront to the rest of the park, and new decks and seating will provide expanded areas to enjoy the magnificent waterfront views.

The design references pre-development conditions when low-lying wetlands extended over the site as well as later use as an industrial waterfront. Portions of a rusted steel bulkhead will be retained and stabilized and the area between planted as a high marsh wetland, protected by ECOncrete units that will create an intertidal habitat zone. Riprap with precast tidepool elements will connect with existing riprap at the site edges.

While the project is focused on habitat creation and shoreline stabilization it will also bring numerous benefits to the residents of this South Bronx community who have been historically disconnected from their waterfront.
