Crocheron Park Buz O'Rourke Playground

This playground is named for James “Buz” O’Rourke (1928-1997), an advisor to Queens Borough President Claire Shulman and a longtime community activist in Bayside. In this third renovation of the park the QRP design provides universal ADA access in each new play area, water play, picnic and seating areas that cater to the wishes of the community and adjacent elemetary school, PS 041, while preserving over 30 existing shade and flowering trees and respecting the graceful curving design language of Crocheron Park.

Sensory elements were added to both play areas and picnic areas were increased to support a broader range of users. A youth fitness area and basketball court provide activities for older children and teens. The park features an ornamental rain garden adding color and interest at the new park entrance and a larger planted retention basin as stormwater managment practices that address localized flooding in the area.
