Overlook Garden at Lyndhurst
Lyndhurst, a historic Gothic Revival mansion on 67-acres overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown NY, arranged with artist Paula Hayes to locate several sculptural pieces in conjunction with an new overlook platform. The overlook was originally built for owner Helen Gould before 1920 as an outdoor office, and was reconstructed using archival photos and archaeological investigations to determine its original location.
QRP worked with Paula to develop a pollinator garden of native species below the overlook where a beautifully hued resin bird bath and a bronze gnome sculpture are sited. On the downslope across the path. bands of native grasses created a setting for three of Paula’s gazing globe sculptures. Seen from the overlook platform above, the plantings emulate a colorful mandala that changes throughout the seasons.
The plantings include drifts of Mountain Mint, Solidago, Joe Pyeweed, Asclepias, Monarda, and Amsonia with Red-twig Dogwood, Fothergilla, and Winterberry planted below the deck. The swaths of grasses are made up of Gramma grass, Northern Switchgrass, and Little Bluestem. QRP developed the planting plan, prepared the town approval package, coordinated the procurement of the plants with Lyndhurst, and worked side by side with the horticultural staff on-site to arrange the plants according to the plans.
This permanent installation was completed for viewing as part of the Upstate Arts Weekend celebration.
