Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey

As campus-wide landscape architects for Princeton University, Quennell Rothschild & Partners has designed and overseen the construction of over one hundred million dollars of new construction projects on campus.

Quennell Rothschild & Partner’s first assignment for Princeton University was to create a comprehensive restoration and improvement plan for the most historic part of the campus. The 17-acre Historic Front Campus includes Princeton’s original building, Nassau Hall (1754), several dormitories, classroom buildings, and the University’s administrative center. Outdoor spaces within the historic campus include the Front Campus, site of the annual commencement exercises; Cannon Green, and numerous elegant courtyards consisting of bluestone walkways and magnificent specimen trees. The restoration and improvement plan, based on detailed surveys and extensive discussions with the Board of Trustees, the President and the University’s physical planning department, provides an overall design approach to sensitive restoration.

Acknowledging the increasing need to provide emergency and service vehicle access to many of the buildings, the plan proposes a new hierarchy of circulation and access routes, which maintain the pedestrian quality of the campus while facilitating necessary vehicular connections. New bluestone and pavers will replace existing deteriorated asphalt surfaces. New furnishings, lighting, signage, and planting will also be added to the campus. Development and construction impacts were guided by a comprehensive tree survey commissioned for QRP.

The firm is also responsible for designing comprehensive renovation and redevelopment of several major open spaces: besides the Front Campus, Scudder Plaza at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs; and the “Ellipse Walk”, a new cross-campus artery forming the southern edge of development. We have served as principal landscape site designers for each of Princeton’s recent building projects, collaborating with the project architects. These include a new science library with Frank O. Gehry, a residential college with Demetri Porphyrios, the Institute for Integrative Genomics with Rafael Viñoly, the Humanities Center with Schwartz & Silver, a new dormitory with Michael Dennis, the Marquand Art Library with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, and Robertson Hall with Ford Farewell Mills & Gatsch.
